I’m tired. It’s been 11 hours on my feet, after too little sleep the night before. My muscles ache, my stomach is empty and I’ve had a full bladder for the past hour even though I’m sure I’m dehydrated. I can feel my scrubs sticking to me with sweat under my sterile gown and the hot OR lights. I have the blood of another covering my gloved hands. I work away silently, knowing I have to give my patient the best care possible, even in my uncomfortable state. I AM A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST!
I’m a surgical ninja, rarely seen or remembered by patients, but a vital role of the surgical team. I may not get much recognition or acknowledgement but I do it because I LOVE IT! I do it because the patients need me. I may not always be saving a life, many days are spent helping patients regain quality of life, even if the surgery is just a minor procedure. I AM A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST!
I don’t just pass instruments! I know the anatomy and physiology of the affected body. I know the instruments and how to use them. I have ideas and knowledge of how to fix the problems that may arise. I am prepared and understand my surgeon’s preferences for the case. I’m familiar with how the surgery should proceed and have laid out all necessary instrumentation for the surgeon. This is just another day in the OR. I LOVE my job, I AM A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST!
Thank you, Surgical Technologists, I appreciate you and your hard work!
HAPPY SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST WEEK!
Love all our surgical techs! You’re awesome girl!
Thank you. Just last night, I did a 7 hour thumb replantation. The doc thanked me and the nurse and said, “You guys are miracle workers!”. My reply was a modest, “All I did was pass instruments, you did all the real work.” There are many days where I feel this way. Many of my associates didn’t even know that it is Surgical Tech Week. Many times I feel we are overshadowed by nurses and underappreciated by managment. That being said, reading your article made me remember that the job is more then jus passing instruments, it’s about quality patient care. Thank you for the post. And, most of all, HAPPY SUGICAL TECH WEEK!!! 😃😅😷🤕
Love this! This definitely describes us CST’s to a T!
Thanks sis!
