Surgical Technologist Week
Yay! It’s almost that time of year when Surgical Technologists get a whole week of recognition. September 17- 23, 2017 is the official week to celebrate and thank all the surgical techs working their asses off. Running an efficient OR is a team effort and the surgical tech is at the center of it all. Show some love and appreciation for your tech this year with some kind words or even a little gift. Whether you are a tech or someone who appreciates us, take a look at the top 10 must haves for the surgical tech.
Top 10 Must Haves For Surgical Tech Week
1-Scrub Caps, a must for every tech! Depending on your facility, you may be able to wear a cloth cap. These are my favorite to show personality while keeping my hair contained. One of my favorites (pictured), is the pixie style two toned cap. It is high quality and comfortable. You can get yours here (affiliate) or shop through amazon’s wide selection of quality caps.
2-Baseball caps are great for those early mornings headed to the OR! Messy hair, don’t care! When you put a cap on for work it really doesn’t matter how it looks, so throw on a ST baseball cap for your commute. I found a great baseball cap here, it reads, Keep Calm and Let the Surgical Tech Handle It!
3-The tote bag is a must for carrying scrub hats and the daily essentials to and from work! I found a great option that will fit all your needs. This cute tote would make a great gift for the ST who always has their hands full!
4-Compression socks are another must have for the ST who is always on their feet! Help alleviate sore feet, legs and back with the perfect pair of compression socks. These socks for men and women, come highly recommended and won’t break the bank!
5-Pair your new compression socks with my favorite OR shoes! The OR shoe must be comfortable and supportive. I found my “swear by” shoes which are a clog by Anywears. These have by far been the best shoes for my long days in the OR. But since everyone is different, I have compiled a few of the top choice shoes by OR professionals. You can find them here.
6-Tech wear! The comfy tee shirts and hoodies we all love but with a personal spin. I have compiled all the items we love that represent the surgical tech and what we do. You can find your favorites here.
7-Tech gear! Almost all of us surgical techs live on coffee! From the early mornings to late nights that amazing drink keeps us going. We may as well drink it with style in awesome ST coffee mugs. Don’t forget the key chains, magnets and other goodies designed just for the surgical tech. You can find these great gifts and more here! Also check out my Pinterest board for other great gift ideas!
8-Being prepared for your next case is a must! But what if it is a surgery you have never done before? I have recently found a resource that blows all others out of the water when it comes to learning surgical cases. The Netflix of Surgical Education! This site is amazing, get access to multiple surgeries within multiple specialties! I am LOVING my premium subscription! I wish it had been around when I was a student. Stop wasting time searching through YouTube! All the videos are in one place and easy to find with high quality content.
- The best videos in 4K, HD and 360 Virtual Reality
- Content from the top institutions and surgeon thought leaders
- The largest 360VR surgical library in the world
- Weekly releases of GIBLIB Original content
- Full length cases with surgeon narration
9-Study Resources! When I was studying for my CST exam, this is the main source I used to study. It is a book by AST, Surgical Technologist Certifying Exam Study Guide(affiliate). This book contains 6 practice exams and science review questions for a total of 1,386 practice questions. Every exam reflects the NBSTSA exam content outline and provides an explanation of each answer. I found this book was most helpful to me because the majority of my exam questions were on the practice tests. *This doesn’t mean it will be exactly the same for you as there are multiple tests but it is a very good starting point.
10-Scrubs! This last item may not apply to every tech, but for students who have to buy their scrubs for school or techs that work in a clinic setting, these scrubs are the BEST! Figs scrubs are amazingly soft and fit perfectly. The fabric is four-way stretch and has moisture-wicking properties (to keep you dry). They are antimicrobial and wrinkle resistant!
